Please park in front of the main house. The steps and path beneath the copper beech will direct you to the wellness area (75 mtrs)
-
We recommend arriving a few minutes early so you can find your way and settle in without rushing.
8. Where exactly are you located?
-
You’ll find us at HARTA retreat, EX31 4NX. Please note that some satnavs may direct you to a gated old road — just continue a little further and look out for the private road signposted HARTA retreat (Cleave Farm) by the large old ash tree.

9. How does the sauna session work – and what should I know before arriving?
-
Once you’ve booked, we’ll send a confirmation email with directions and session details.
-
On the day, please arrive a few minutes early and wear your swimwear under your clothes or robe – this helps you make the most of your time, especially as we do not have a formal changing area.
-
You’re welcome to change discreetly outdoors (a bit like at the beach) or to use the toilet in the event tipi. If you do, please leave it clean and tidy for others.
-
Your 1-hour booking includes changing time and you’re welcome to re-enter the sauna as often as you like during your session.
-
For safety and hygiene, always sit on a towel in the sauna, and take care on walkways, the cold plunge deck and outdoor shower – they can be slippery when wet.
-
If you'd like to add water to the sauna stones, please only use the water provided – and get everyone’s consent first. Drizzle gently rather than pour – this prevents sudden temperature spikes.
-
To keep the space clean and safe for everyone, please don’t use oils, scrubs or other products during your session.
10. How should I manage the heat in the sauna?
-
The temperature inside the sauna typically ranges between 70°C and 90°C, and may fluctuate during your session.
-
We recommend staying inside for 5 to 12 minutes at a time, followed by a short break outside to cool down. You can use the sand timer provided to help you keep track.
-
If it gets too hot, try moving to a lower bench, stepping outside for some air, or (with everyone’s agreement) briefly open the door to reduce the temperature.
-
Hydration is important, so be sure to drink water before, during, and after your session. You might also like to bring a sauna hat, which helps regulate body temperature during your stay.
-
DO NOT try to adjust the temperature of the sauna yourself. Our staff will ensure an appropriate temperature is maintained
11. How do I manage the cold plunge?
-
Hot and cold therapy works best when you listen to your body and take it slow – especially if you’re new to cold immersion.
-
We recommend starting gradually: begin by dipping your feet and legs, then splash cold water on your arms, chest, and back.
-
Once you feel ready, you can submerge yourself fully in the cold plunge barrel – taking slow, controlled breaths as you do.
-
The outdoor shower is another option for cooling off gently.
-
Remember, it’s not about how long you stay in – even a short dip can bring real benefits.
If you have any questions before your session or are unsure whether sauna use is safe for you, please email us in advance at hello@harta-retreat.co.uk
