We're on the edge of Exmoor, which in 2011 became Europe's first International Dark Sky Reserve. On a clear night, the stars put on a show of their own, so raise a glass by the fire at midnight and look up.
Start the year with a bracing walk along the beach at Woolacombe, Croyde or Saunton, or join the locals at the Croyde New Year's Day fancy dress dip [date and time to be confirmed] and plunge into the sea in your best costume. Or simply hunker down in a cosy tipi with the one you love.
Arrive early, leave late, and let the fire and the fizz set the scene.
